The question is asked, is the open admission policy at HACC a good idea or a bad idea? In my opinion and reasoning, this is good idea because of being a dislocated worker with no other trade or job opportunity to make it financially. My three reasons why it is good idea.
1. It allows those who didn’t graduate from high school and earned a GED or even a student’s GPA wasn't high enough to earn a scholarship in entering a normal college. This allows them an second chance and opportunity of learning in their selected field of interests. In which now a days most jobs are requiring more and more education to be able to apply for position.
2. The open admission also allows people who were not focused or financially ready for college at the time of graduation from high school. They may had no idea in what they really wanted to do for work and allowed some time to pass until they could figure it out. There also may have been possibilities of there parents never set money aside for them or they could not afford the expensive of tuition.
3. This opens a opportunity for people to achieve degree’s to advance them at there current jobs position. This will also help those people who have become a dislocated worker to find another field of interest in which they may enter. As this economic down turn has put thousands of workers on the unemployment line needing a new field of work. As the unemployment pool grows the company’s are now asking for more and more job related qualifying skills or associated degree’s to be able to apply for positions.
As there is in every argument there has to be counter position of why people would disagree with your position, these are the three that I have come up to appose my idea’s.
1. The employer of the individual going to school may feel that their dedication to their current job position maybe declining. This maybe a concern to the employer as they might not be able to work overtime as they are needed or required. The employer may asked or find out that their employee are taking interests in a different field then the current job position which may lead to them leaving the employer at a later date.
2. The concerns from the utility company, credit cards, and mortgage company’s are not to welcoming to this idea. There main concern is where’s are money? They repeatedly ask what more important to you, your credit history, losing your home to foreclosure or your education? They say why are you wasting time and money on a long education process when I should out looking for employment?
3. Future employer’s may not consider a open admission college graduate as highly as they would a regular college graduate, even if the open admission graduate would have high honors and high GPA scores. As most employer’s are looking for the cream of the crop in employee’s for their company. I could possibly see that open admission grads would be over looked and last to be considered for position.
